There’s an excitement about fishing in the spring that no other season knows.
Sure, anglers dream of wading cool rivers on crisp summer days. We love the thrill of casting while the leaves and temperatures are falling in autumn. For those of us who love to angle in the winter, there’s something magical about hooking into a trout while the snow is falling and world is quiet it seems like you’ve got the whole thing to yourself.
Spring is all hope. It’s about new beginnings. It’s about tradition like celebrating the opener in June Lake, California, or Picabo, Idaho. It’s about fishing with family and friends, about sharing old stories and making new ones.
Even people who don’t fish get excited about the opener each spring. It is the official kick-off to another season of outdoor fun under the sun. Fish, especially trout, do live in some spectacular places.

-The tradition of fishing opening day in the Eastern Sierra has been bringing family and friends together for the last weekend in April for a century.
-Fred Hall is a legendary name in fishing. His son, Bart, is carrying on the family tradition, including sponsoring an annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby in honor of his dad.
-Fishing is always about a lot more than the fish, especially for trout, which live in such beautiful places. There is arguably no more stunning spot to fish for trout than amongst Nature’s Poetry at Rock Creek in the High Sierra.
-Spring fishing around Sun Valley usually means big dry flies. The annual brown drake hatch at Silver Creek is the stuff of angler—and amateur entomologists—dreams.
-Redfish Technology works on dream of another sort: finding folks their dream jobs. The was once again the Hailey, Idaho-based recruiting company took home first place in the Best Places to Work in Idaho contest, and the company’s founder and president, Rob Reeves, was named 2015 Idaho Business Leader of the Year.
